FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS...
A suggestion, before you begin, please click on the SIGN IN tab (upper right corner of the Home page), to register with your email address and password. That way, if you find any photos of interest that you want to save in a personal file (entitled FAVORITES), to view (or buy) later, you won't have to search again as a copy of the photo is stored for you.
Q - HOW DO I FIND A PHOTO?
1) The easiest way is to click on the SEARCH tab (upper right corner of Home page). In the search window, enter the ship’s name (or designation ie. CL-45), or an individual's name (ex. Eisenhower), plane, tank, division, battlion, squadron, regiment, company, etc (ex. 82nd AB) war, battle, campaign or operation (ex. Iwo Jima) or other search term and hit return then all photos related to that subject will come up.
2) Another way to search...click on the GALLERIES tab (upper right corner), next scroll down, and then scroll left to find the photo category.
SEARCH EXAMPLE: BATTLE OF OKINAWA
Click on: GALLERIES (right side of page)
Scroll down to and click on: WWII - MARINES
Scroll left and click on: MARINE-BATTLES
Scroll left again and click on: OKINAWA (then the photos will appear; depending on your computer, usually 10 photos to a page and the system will automatically scroll through the photos.
NOTE: If you see photos you like, click on FAVORITES at the top of the photo to save them to review at any time. When you decide to purchase a photo, click BUY NOW and a window will come up showing you the different photo sizes and pricing options. Remember: you must first register then log-into your account.
TO ENLARGE A PHOTO FOR A CLOSER VIEW… Either put your mouse pointer directly over the photo or click on the SPY GLASS icon below the photo.
TO HOLD PHOTOS IN FAVORITES ... As mentioned in the NOTE above, if you see photos you like, click on FAVORITES at the top of the photo to save them to review at any time.
Q - WHAT IF I CAN'T FIND A PHOTO I'M LOOKING FOR?
We have digitized and uploaded photos to the Galleries, but to date, only about one quarter of the entire collection is online, so if you can't find what you are looking for, just drop us a line on the CONTACT page with a brief description of the topic you are looking for and we'll respond via email with the number of photos we have, then upload them within the next business day.
Also, we now offer either a free print catalog of your subject (sent via U.S. Mail) or we can create a PRIVATE GALLERY. Which means, we do the searching and create an online, private gallery to save you time. Just call us at 734 327-9696, and tell us what you are looking for. Then all you have to do is log on to the Galleries, (or have a grand child do it for you), fix your favorite drink, sit back, and enjoy the journey back in time.
Q - HOW DO I PLACE AN ORDER?
Click on the SHOPPING CART icon below the photo; a price list window will open that allows you to scroll down to pick print size and quantity. The next window will show you the total photos in your cart and allow you to proceed to purchase, change your order or continue shopping. NOTE: At any point, you can go back to do more shopping; keep items in your cart for possible future purchase; abort or go on to purchase.
Q - ARE THE PHOTOS COPYRIGHT CLEARED?
Yes, all are cleared for purchase. Understanding royalties, rights and the public domain-The vast majority of the digital images in the RWP Collection are from the National Archives and Records Administration or the Library of Congress and have been declassified from the various branches of service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard). These photos were taken by the Signal Corps or military personnel and are in the public domain, meaning they belong to the people. No written permission is required to use anything that is public domain. If you are an author, or publisher, we can provide proof via the archive numbers. We only ask that you credit the National Archives first, and Real War Photos second as the source. Exception photos are those in a few private collections such as the Iraq and Afganistan galleries. the owners have provided clearance of use letters. For private collection usage in a book, please write or email a permissions request.
Q - HOW DO I ORDER A DIGITAL DOWNLOAD?
Photo orders for digital downloads will be processed in order as received and usually take from 2 to 24 hrs during business days, depending on the order. If you are in a rush, please call us at 734-327-9696 to request an expedited order.
